Pontardawe has a long tradition of excellence in sports with the town well-represented at national level in several. However, one sport was named by young and old during our discussions with the community whilst attempting to identify which aspects of our heritage to reflect in out artwork, and that was rugby.

One individual, Justin Tipuric, was repeatedly named at the time as a hero for the community, largely for his impressive campaign as captain of Wales in the 2022 Autumn series. Tipuric who was born in Alltwen and played his youth rugby for Trebanos RFC, now plays for the Ospreys. Having won 93 caps for Wales and been selected for three successive British and Irish Lions tour, Tips retired from the international stage in 2023. The image on the cabinet reflects the flanker’s lightening speed and trademark blue scrum cap which compliments the traditional Trebanos RFC colours. Behind him, in an effort to pay homage to a photograph taken in 2022 of young Trebanos fans wearing blue scrum caps at the Principality Stadium, is an ecstatic crowd in full voice.
